Findlay Market: SNAP Programming

Findlay MarkeT: SNAP Programming

Fresh Fair

Background on SNAP Program: SNAP Plus is a program that makes fresh, local food more affordable for families on food stamps by matching participant’s spending at Cincinnati’s Findlay Market after attending food nutrition classes. Although this program has many benefits, it wasn’t as successful as Findlay Market had hoped, prior to this revamp.

Fresh Fair: This project connected real participants, the Nutrition Council of Cincinnati, and Findlay Market to create a program for SNAP Plus participants. We found that through greater organization and interaction within market materials, as well as designing with low-literacy and low-income participants in mind, improvements could be made. By implementing these changes the SNAP Plus program could help Findlay Market better serve the needs of its community and re-define the value of the farmer’s market to low-income families.

Signage

Signage was designed to help participants find the areas of the market they need, as well as posters to promote the program.

Process

Focus groups and input from the participants were important in creating a program that was understandable and useful. Every week that the participants attended the classes, cards were added to their packets. Each card would highlight preparation and storage tips, nutritional information and an easy recipe.
